Each
year, hundreds of Minnesota's children and adolescents experience
severe emotional or behavioral problems. For an infinite number
of reasons - from emotional trauma to physical abuse - children
can become dangerous to themselves and to others or develop symptoms
indicating serious mental illness. Because of the severity of these
problems, many families find they simply can't help their children
- not by themselves, anyway - regardless of background or home situation.
Members
of MCCCA offer a spectrum of care for children and adolescents,
designed to help these young people get the right help at the right
time. Individual needs determine just what the "right help" might
include.
Out-Patient
Services typically means counseling or therapy - one-on-one,
with the family, or in a group session. These services are usually
available in the community, keeping the child in the home and school.
These services can also include skills training and short term therapeutic
support for at risk children in traditional foster care.
In-Home
Services generally involve a trained professional meeting with
a family and child in their home to strengthen a family's
ability to cope, and can be used in conjunction with other
types of treatment.
Day
and Evening Treatment Programs provide a structured environment
for a child - without placement in a full-time residential setting.
These programs can easily mesh with other services; they also
keep the young person at home while services are delivered.
Emergency
Shelters provide a temporary safe placement for children when,
for a variety of reasons, they cannot stay at home. Shelters
offer an opportunity to assess the status of the child and
the family so that a further referral can be made to the
right level
of service.
Evaluation/Diagnostic
Programs are usually 30 day inpatient assessments
where the child is evaluated through formal diagnostic testing, observation
and functional assessment. |
